Spring Featured Artist: Susanna Bemetz
by Stephen Hans

1) What kind of alcohol ink artist are you? How did you get started? Tell us a little about you.
I have been an artist most of my life. I graduated from Northwest Nazarene University with my BA in studio art. I love to paint with wild abandon and never leave a painting session without ink decorating my arms and hands. I live on top of a mountain not far from the ocean. Beautifully doug fir trees and misty mornings are what I wake up to each morning. My paintings are a reflection of the gorgeous Pacific Northwest.

2) What would you say are your specialties as an alcohol ink artist? What sets you apart?
I would say my ink paintings are different because they are grounded in nature with clear imagery. Although they can wander into hints of abstraction at times. I love the chaotic nature of inks. You never know what they’re going to do.

3) Do you teach how to do this at all? How can we learn from you?
I do not teach art to anyone but my 5 and 9 year old children at this time:) I work a full time job in retail and spend my evenings painting when the kids are in bed.

4) What advice for new alcohol ink artists would you offer?
Let go of fear and embrace the unknown. Alcohol inks are volatile and do not always react the way you expect. I have found the more I just enjoy the vibrance and fluidity of the inks and go with the flow the more I can create magic on the paper.

5) What have you enjoyed most about using T-Rex Inks? Do you have any in-depth review videos / posts about using our inks we can link to?
I’m sorry no. I’m not great at reels and reviews. I’m hoping somewhere in my future I have time to learn. However I can tell you pacific blue is my favorite ink of all time. It’s almost a Prussian blue. I’d paint all my clothes and and dye my hair that color if I could. I haven’t found another that compares.

Thanks so much for the interview Susanna! We are huge fans of your work, and can't wait to see what else that brilliant mind of yours creates.
