August's Artist & Ambassador of the Month: Shauna McNair

by Stephen Hans

This month we are happy to feature Shauna McNair a.k.a. Ambacthaus on Instagram as our August Artist of the Month!

1) What kind of alcohol ink artist are you? How did you get started? Tell us a little about you.
Hi, I'm Shauna McNair, also known as Ambachthaus. I am a versatile abstract artist who explores various mediums. I am an artistic soul at heart and I get giddy in the world of interior design, I love creating delicious culinary dishes and desserts, and planning events that often feature one of my elaborate cakes. Blessed with a loving supporting husband and two little cheerleaders who proudly dub me as a “famous artist”, it’s both hilarious and endearing at the same time.

I stumbled upon Alcohol Inks by accident actually. The first time I saw a piece created with alcohol ink, I was captivated by its beauty. Eager to try it out, I hurried to the local craft store and bought acrylic inks, mistakenly assuming they were the same. It didn't take long to realize my mistake when I tried adding alcohol to them, resulting in an immediate failure. I dived into research, practiced intensely, and voila - my exciting adventure into the realm of Alcohol inks began! I will always remember my very first set of inks – T-Rex Alcohol Inks. I purchased the Warm Earth Tones Premium Alcohol Ink 12 Bottle set which included metallic gold.

2) What would you say are your specialties as an alcohol ink artist? What sets you apart?

This is a challenging question. I think every artist has their own individuality, flair and distinct style when working with alcohol inks. Maybe For me, and what sets me apart is about embracing the freedom and creativity that stems from being inspired by natural elements. The best feedback I receive is when people compare my pieces to opened geodes, revealing the beauty inside.

3) Do you teach how to do this at all? How can we learn from you?

Oh, how I would love to teach, I think I would like to enhance my skills a little further before I get to that point. I am more than happy to share my advice with other artists and assist them on their creative journey. The support I have received from fellow artists in the past has truly humbled me. I used to be so scared when it came to seeking help or advice. But guess what? The alcohol ink community welcomed me with open arms! Remember, it never hurts to ask - the worst they can do is say "NO"!

4) What advice for new alcohol ink artists would you offer?

Get ready to dive into the creative whirlwind, trusting that each brushstroke, color, and shape creates its own captivating narrative. This art ride is all about uncovering your true self and linking with others that share in the same passion. The challenges and mistakes along the journey are just as remarkable as the moments of inspiration. Art is more than just the final product; it's about the shared experience and the emotions it stirs in those who interact with your creations.

5) What have you enjoyed most about using T-Rex Inks? Do you have any in-depth review videos / posts about our inks we can link to?

Obsessed with how these vibrant inks slide across paper! There is a certain smoothness about them, if that makes sense. I've dabbled in various inks, but T-Rex inks? They're the real MVP. Their colors stay true and never disappoint! Here are a couple of pieces using T-Rex inks.

I appreciate the opportunity to share my artistic journey with you and for supporting my passion for alcohol inks by showcasing my work. It means a lot to me! Thank you so much!

Thank you, Shauna, for such a lovely interview!
